Dr. Johnson is the director of the University of Mississippi’s Oxford Writing Center and a lecturer of composition and rhetoric. Her principal area of pedagogical interest and expertise is the integration of digital media and technology in composition and instruction. She teaches advanced composition and professional writing courses, as well as gender studies as a faculty affiliate for the Sarah Isom Center. Her research draws on writing center pedagogy and practice as well as issues of equity and access in higher education. She is interested in institutional and cultural norms surrounding writing and their effect on student perceptions of identity and ability. She is active in several professional organizations related to writing center practice and scholarship, including the International Writing Center Association and Southeastern Writing Center Association. She currently serves on the Board of the Mississippi Writing Center Association. Her favorite part of her job is getting to know students and helping them realize their potential as writers and professionals. Dr. Johnson is a lifelong Trekkie with a serious nostalgia for alien movies of the ’70s and ’80s. She welcomes any opportunity to discuss science fiction and the history of the horror genre with fellow nerds.

Bailey serves as the graduate assistant director of the Writing Center. She is originally from Oklahoma, but loves to travel and has taught abroad in China. She has too many hobbies for her own good and likes to bake, pet her dog, and play sports and video games. Her favorite food is sushi, and her favorite TV shows are The X-Files and King of the Hill.

Nadia enjoys empowering students and helping them strengthen their skills as writers and critical thinkers. When she’s not creating or working, she loves listening to music, birdwatching, and spending time with friends. She recently binge-watched Issa Rae’s TV series Insecure and can’t wait for season five. Her favorite dessert since she was a child is chocolate chip cookies.

Elisa is currently working on her Master’s thesis that focuses on 19th century American female writers. In past years, Elisa taught 9th and 7th grade English, which fostered one of her greatest passions: teaching students how to write. Her writing pedagogy centers around empowering students to become better, effective communicators. In her free time, Elisa takes cooking inspiration from the Food Network, is always looking to play the newest board game, and watches films from any genre to add to her ongoing movie list.

Dresden is a sophomore. She is a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, the UM mock trial team, Oakes Society, and the Warren Debate Union. She loves playing ultimate frisbee, as well as sewing and calligraphy. Her favorite way to pass time however is by playing board games with her friends and family.

Dylan is a senior and a lover of reading and writing. He’s a huge advocate of self-love and tries to always look at things from a positive perspective. He is an avid hoarder of many things and forms bonds with inanimate objects and fictional characters far too easily.

Lauren is a junior in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College. She studied abroad in Norwich, United Kingdom at the University of East Anglia last semester. As a junior in high school, she self-published her first novella. Her favorite things to do in life are to write and to pet dogs.

Gabrielle is a second-semester senior. This past summer, she got to visit San Diego. Her favorite activity there was paragliding, and her least favorite activity was getting a sunburn. When Gabrielle is not working on school assignments or at the Writing Center, she might be playing with her dogs or working out, but most of the time she’s just being lazy.

Morgan is a senior from Oxford, Mississippi. While she has a true and established passion for the humanities and arts, she also has a new-found love for the sciences. She holds a steadfast belief that art and science go hand-in-hand and not only aid, but in fact sustain each other. She plans to become a nurse in the near future and was just accepted into Emory University’s masters program (woohoo)! In her free time, she loves to travel, hike, forage wild foods, cook, and generally just spend time outside.

Mason is a junior. He loves video games and is a die-hard Game of Thrones fan. Both of his parents and his older sister went to college right here at the University of Mississippi so he has always known that he would end up here. He tries to get involved in as many intramural sports as he can so that he can try to relive the glory days of high school athletics. There is nothing he loves more than making some popcorn and witnessing Matthew McConaughey’s masterful performance in Interstellar.

Alexis is a senior. She has been a writing consultant for three years and loves working with students to help them develop their writing skills for the future. A fun fact about Alexis is that she walked with lions while on a mission trip to Africa!

It’s why she loves being a tutor at the Writing Center and why she can’t wait to listen to the ideas that you have to share in your essay!

He is a big fan of yacht rock and once journeyed to a bar in New York specifically because it was mentioned in a Steely Dan song.

Dr. Mischker is the director of The Graduate Writing Center as well as a lecturer of Composition. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English from Winthrop University in South Carolina and completed her Ph.D. in English at the University of Mississippi with a concentration in Modern American Literature. Her literary research focuses on gender theory in the novels of William Faulkner, and she has participated in various regional, national, and international conferences on Writing Center theory. She has worked in Writing Centers at both Winthrop and UM and has been working extensively with graduate writers since 2013.

Dr. Jackson is Interim Director of the Tupelo Writing Center and an Instructor. Her research focuses on scholarly productivity, writing groups, and the perceptions and impacts of “publish or perish.” She also is interested in autoethnography and other forms of qualitative research. Since 2018, she has taught first-year writing composition courses in the Department of Writing and Rhetoric and graduate higher education courses as a faculty affiliate for the Department of Higher Education. Dr. Jackson is a 2019-21 faculty fellow with the UM Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies fellowship program. In May 2019 she was chosen as a 2019-20 participant of the Op-Ed Project, a national initiative aimed at increasing the public impact of the nation’s top underrepresented thinkers, broadening gender equity, and shifting the dynamic of public discourse. Since 2017, she has been a contributing writer for Inside Higher Ed. Dr. Jackson also has presented research at the annual meetings of the Association of Rhetoric and Writing Studies, the American Educational Research Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and at the UM Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Dr. Jackson always enjoys coaxing productive writing from her students and other faculty. She loves watching street food videos and bingeing on international crime and mystery dramas.
