Instructions
- Sign in with your UM WebID and password.
- Look for an open time slot that works for your schedule (represented by white boxes).
- Click on the time slot of your choice to open the appointment reservation form. Fill this out to share information with our consultants about your goals for the session. Attach any relevant documents to the appointment reservation form. You can attach a draft, assignment description, or another document like an outline or comments from a teacher. Keep in mind, any attachments should be either .doc or .docx format (Microsoft Word). Click here to learn how to convert documents.
- If you are scheduling an online appointment, make sure you choose the type of online appointment that works best for you.
- Live Chat appointments allow you to work in real time with a consultant using video conferencing, screen sharing, and/or a text based messaging.
- Correspondence appointments require you to upload a draft and share information related to your assignment or task. You’ll receive written feedback from a consultant at the end of your appointment time (about an hour later).
Preparing for an Appointment
- Bring any assignment requirements or a description of your project to share with your consultant.
- Gather any drafting or brainstorming you’ve done; even writing that is really informal can sometimes have bits of brilliance that can be developed into ideas and evidence.
- If you are working on a research-based project, have your sources handy. You might not need to share the entire source with your consultant, but sometimes it can be useful to see where a particular quotation/paraphrase comes from or examine citation information more closely.
- Identify the most important goals or concerns you have about your writing prior to the start of your appointment. Share this with your consultant so they can help you prioritize the time you have together.
- Consider making multiple appointments, especially for longer projects. It may be difficult to address all of your concerns in just one session.
Policies
- The GWC provides expertise and advice on any higher order concerns (generating ideas, organization, unity, etc.) and answers questions about lower order concerns (grammar, punctuation, etc.).
- Our services do not include proofreading or editing; it is also our policy not to reread passages unless they include major revisions.
- Due to high volume, appointments are available in one-hour-long sessions only. If you have long (10+pages) documents, please make multiple appointments and understand that consultants may not be able to finish reading a lengthy document in its entirety before your deadline. Therefore, during scheduled sessions, it would be best to present specific sections or passages that you know need attention.
- Only .doc/x files can be uploaded to appointments.
Before making an appointment with the GWC, please review the following information and policies regarding appointments:
- Students may make up to two (2) appointments per week.
- Students must be actively engaged with consultants during each session.
- The GWC cultivates an environment that promotes inclusion, integrity, and safety. We ask that you do the same during sessions and with consultants.
