Our Approach
We help students cultivate strategies and processes to become independent, effective, and confident writers.
To that end, our consultations are focused and collaborative. Students work one on one with their consultant on important issues or strategies related to their writing through discussion and analysis of rhetorical choices. Students are challenged to examine how these choices are shaped by different forms, audiences, and contexts. We provide access to resources and mentor students toward the development of their own individual writing processes. Ultimately, we encourage students to practice and develop skills that they can both apply to the current assignment or task and transfer to future writing projects.
Please keep in mind that the UM Writing Centers do not provide proofreading or editing services. Students interested in professional editing services may be able to contact the graduate school to circulate requests for freelance editing services.
Referring Students
The Writing Center is a place where all writers can learn the value of a careful reader’s feedback. Faculty who engage in peer review and feedback as a matter of professional practice are some of our best ambassadors! One of the most common reasons students list for how they heard about us and why they visit our centers is through the recommendation of a trusted faculty mentor.
Ways to Facilitate Positive Writing Center Experiences for Students
- Share information about the Writing Center early and often in your course and with all of your students collectively.
- Discuss the writing process and the benefits of feedback and revision.
- Encourage students to bring assignment descriptions and course expectations to writing consultations.
- Help students identify specific areas/skills in need of development or practice.
